What is Search Engine Optimization?

You may have heard of the term SEO before at least a couple of times.

No SEO does not stand for a super energetic octopus, rather it stands for search engine optimization. But exactly what is search engine optimization? In simple terms, SEO is when a company optimizes its website in a way which is best suited to attract organic traffic from search engines such as Google or Bing.

What is Search Engine Optimization: How Does SEO work?

To make this explanation simpler, we will be using an example. Jim is trying to look for a new car, thus he enters the term “reliable new cars.” Once he does this, millions of results will pop up, but not all of them will show up on the first page, where most people will spend their time and attention on. The search engine looks through millions of sites that have keywords that are relevant to what Jim is searching for. Furthermore, sites with well laid out sites will receive a higher ranking whenever a keyword related to them is searched up. Because of this, Jim will most likely only click on the sites the first few sites that are on the top of the page. Every business wants to have millions of people like Jim to click on their website, as that is organic traffic that can potentially lead to client leads, which in turn, turns into money!

What is Search Engine Optimization: How can I use SEO in a simple way?

One of the most simplest things you can do to better optimize your website is to create content. This content can be anything from blogs, podcasts, or videos that contain useful information related to your company or the industry it is in. By doing this, not only will your search engine rankings be higher, but the viewers of this content, aka humans, will spend more time on your site, which is a good thing when you want them to be interested in whatever product you are offering. Another aspect to putting out content is consistency. You should aim to release content in any form at least once a day. This is because people don’t like reading informational content that is 6 months old, nor do the search engines, as your ranking would be much lower if the content that is related to a keyword is extremely old.

What is Search Engine Optimization: How can I effectively utilize SEO?

Now that you know the basics of SEO, to effectively use SEO to your advantage, you have to optimize the elements on your website. You have to use the keyword that you created all throughout the specific elements of the website, such as the title tag, meta description, and in the alt tags. Essentially these 3 things tell the search engine what your page/site is about, so when someone searches your keyword or something relevant to it, your page should show up on the first few pages of the rankings. You also should use subheadings, since H1, H2, and H3 tags help search engines understand what is going on, on your page.

SEO is not a tough topic to understand, it is simply just tedious to apply all throughout your website. The key points to take away are to have a strong relevant keyword, as that is the meat of SEO. With this keyword, you should utilize all throughout your website, such as in the title tags or meta description. Finally, you should create and upload new content daily on your website to help keep it fresh to your viewers, but also to the search engine as well.
